First thoughts on Torchwood

Torchwood Part I
As a two year fan of Doctor Who thanks to Netflix, I figured it was time to check the spin-off called Torchwood. Torchwood stars John Barrowman as the dashing leader Captain Jack Harkness of Torchwood 3. Under his command is former Cardiff Police officer Gwen Cooper, doctor Owen Harper, the team's technology guru Toshiko Sato, and team's gopher Ianto Jones. Torchwood 3's job to investigate possible alien threats to Earth.

I have made it through the first half of the second series and come up with a few thoughts. My first thought on Torchwood "this seems like a light version of Doctor Who." So far it appears that almost each episode stands alone with occasional plot lines from another episode. The only plot line that seems to go on throughout the series is what is Jack's history. Doctor Who on the other tends string long plot lines from one episode through another and sometimes into the next season, such as River Song and the Doctor's relationship.

Another thought that has come my mind and most viewers is amount of sexual activity appears on and off screen. It is nice to see homosexual interactions have a deeper meaning then most sci-fi shows where two women kiss and/or have a homosexual encounter, just to get male viewership up. Unlike some shows on television it also nice that intercourse is shown having many levels that just the usual "lets have sex becuase we are horny." Some of the sides of sexual intercourse shown are companionship, stress relief, relief of sexual tension, physical/mental bonding and more.

Part II coming soon.
